The Next Generation of Eco- Warriors: Singaporeans Take Action
As Our Better World’s environment series, Our Better Earth, moves into its final year under the theme ‘Reimagine,’ the world is experiencing the acute effects of climate change. Rising temperatures have led to extreme weather events, and wildfires have proliferated and intensified. Deforestation and biodiversity loss continue unabated, while plastic pollution remains a major challenge to our ecosystems. Now, more than ever, we need to find innovative ways to coexist in harmony with nature.
Singapore faces the same universal environmental challenges as larger nations. At times, it may feel like we can only react to the path the rest of the world decides to follow. Yet, despite its small size and urban landscape, Singapore has emerged as a global leader in tackling climate change and promoting sustainability. It has a long-standing vision to transform Singapore into a "Green City" by balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability. The Lion City also plays a leading role in regional climate change initiatives and actively collaborates with neighbouring countries to address shared environmental challenges.
Our youths have not been resting on their laurels either. In a city-state known for its towering skyscrapers and bustling streets, residents might think that they are insulated from the climate crisis — which disproportionately affects those in developing countries. But our youths are highly attuned to what’s happening beyond our shores, thanks to digital connectivity. They realise that time is not on their side, and share a desire to take an active role in deciding the kind of environment they want to live in.
Armed with passion and technology, Singapore's Gen Z is tackling the climate crisis head-on. From climate advocacy to sustainable start-ups, our youths are bravely nudging us to reimagine how we can live fulfilling yet sustainable lives.
