WE TURN 10!

WE TURN 10!

2022 marks our 10th year of telling stories to inspire action.

10 years of unearthing stories of people doing good for their communities.

10 years of putting these crucial causes in the spotlight so they can be seen, heard and supported…one story at a time.

10 years of bonding over stories as a community, in which we encourage each other to build a better world.

THIS IS US

LOOKING BACK

Through our stories, you, our community, have learnt about the issues challenging the most underserved communities and threatened environments across Asia.

You have shared these stories and started conversations, broken barriers, and championed causes by giving your time and resources.

The power of these actions are captured in our Impact Report, which shows how far we have come together on this amazing journey, and how far we still have to go.

“I've seen news about refugees before. Mostly outside South East Asia. But I've never really taken action to help them. OBW brought their story and plight closer to home. Thank you OBW Singapore.”

LOOKING FORWARD

In the next decade, we want these waves of good to ripple further.

We will bring you stories that not only drive support to causes that resonate with you, but surge further to bring positive change to other causes that matter.

In an open letter, Jeremy Heng, our Head at OBW, paints a picture of how this can unfold.

Dearest Our Better World community,

In the past 10 years, we've told many stories of people from different walks of life. The one thing they all have in common? They're all catalysts for good. People with a bias for action who decided to do something good for the world and did it.

We are greatly inspired by how their tireless efforts often create ripples of good that reach far beyond their immediate fields of work.

We've met conservationists like Lara, who empower and collaborate with marginalised communities to save endangered wildlife. We've met champions of inclusivity like Ankit, who tackle caste discrimination while protecting the environment.

We'll take this inspiration into our next decade to further empower communities, by seeking out more stories of people like Lara and Ankit.

Here's where you come in.

Every one of your actions of good can support more than just a single cause; they also can address other inequalities that intersect with the causes closest to your heart.

Together, we can make a bigger impact in this world we share — by opening ourselves up to taking actions that count in more ways than one.

STORY PROFILES

Meet our Catalysts for Good. People with a bias for action who decided to do something good for the world and did it.

They, among many others we have featured in past stories, have been tirelessly making their efforts count in more ways than one.

“If each of us keeps our eyes open to the problems and challenges of others around us, and look for what we can do to make their spheres of influence more kind, more accepting, and more just, wouldn't the world be a better place?”

Karen Teo, Restore

Karen Teo, Restore

Karen founded Re-Store to breathe new life into discarded fabrics by upcycling them into fashionable accessories, but her mission for sustainability doesn't end there. She employs seamstresses from underprivileged backgrounds to produce Re-Store's pieces, making Re-Store a social enterprise that brings positive change to both people and planet.

“It is not only about financial livelihoods, but also about dignity and respect.”

Ankit Agarwal, Phool

Ankit Agarwal, Phool

A river filled with waste discarded from nearby temples in his hometown of Kanpur, India, nudged Ankit into creating Phool, a social enterprise that turns waste into incense and various recycled materials. But compassion spurred him to go further and tackle stigma by employing Dalit women — who face harsh discrimination in India — to produce Phool's products. His vision of an inclusive and eco-friendly future has empowered some 3,700 women to date.

“The intent is to make sure that I make a difference in people's lives. That is the biggest motivation for me.”

Mritunjay Tiwary, Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital

Mritunjay Tiwary, Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital

Football, patriarchy and blindness may not have obvious links to one another, but in the hands of Mritunjay, the world's most popular sport has become a tool for tackling injustice. Through Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital, girls from underprivileged communities develop confidence and agency over their lives by learning how to play football. They are then given the opportunity to train as optometrists and work at Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital, which in turn provides free surgery to the poor to eradicate curable blindness.

“We envision a world where all people are treated with respect and dignity.”

Nerissa Cumpino, Mercy in Action

Nerissa Cumpino, Mercy in Action

Seasoned midwife Nerissa found renewed purpose when she joined forces with non-profit Mercy in Action, which helped her rebuild her clinic in Leyte, Philippines, after it was battered by a typhoon. Not only does Nerissa's clinic offer free maternal healthcare to women from under-resourced communities, she also supports Mercy in Action in the continued training of midwives, helping compassionate healthcare take root in places that need it the most.

“In this world, we are all interconnected and what we do in our own space will affect others outside this space. Whatever small bit that we are doing matters in the bigger picture of things.”

Lara Ariffin, RIMAU

Lara Ariffin, RIMAU

Lara founded RIMAU to save the iconic Malayan tiger from extinction, but her mission goes beyond survival for the critically endangered big cat. RIMAU's Menraq programme also empowers the Jahai, an indigenous people who have lived in Royal Belum Temengor Forest for generations. By tapping the Jahai's knowledge of the forest to carry out anti-poaching activities, RIMAU supplements their livelihoods as they work together to save the Malayan tiger.

“No man is an island. If we were to do things on our own, naturally it's going to be a very difficult task. But when people come in from all sorts of backgrounds, we all can push towards a better place, a better society.”

Nizar Shariff, Free Food for All

Nizar Shariff, Free Food for All

For Nizar, food is more than sustenance, it also builds communities. He founded Free Food for All to deliver free meals to underprivileged communities in Singapore, and has hired community members to do the cooking, supplementing their incomes. He also founded Food for Change to support refugees and communities in crises around the world with food, clean water and medical assistance.
